Do you like nuts?
Most of us do…which is good…because they are good for us. They contain a variety of good nutrients including protein, fiber, vitamins and anti-oxidants such as selenium. It would seem out of all the common nuts, pistachios, peanuts, almonds, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, cashews, macadamia nuts and pecans that the good ole walnut is the most nutrient dense of all of them. This is according to researchers at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania.
"A handful of walnuts contain almost twice as much antioxidant as an equivalent amount of any other commonly consumed nut. But unfortunately, people don't eat a lot of them. This study suggests that consumers should eat more walnuts as part of a healthy diet," said study author Joe Vinson, Ph.D.
A big advantage of eating walnuts is that they are generally raw and the nutrients which are lost from roasting or other processing doesn’t happen with walnuts. Even though they are high in calories they don’t contribute much to weight gain as they tend to satisfy hunger pangs.
So, if you feel like a snack during the day grab a walnut!
