I have been a practicing integrated medicine physician since 1986. In all those years I have not found another nutritional product like omega 3 fish oil supplements. In my opinion, the evidence for its use every day is substantial.
I have been a practicing integrated medicine physician since 1986. In all those years I have not found another nutritional product like omega 3 fish oil supplements. In my opinion, the evidence for its use every day is substantial and with very few exceptions without significant risks.
I hope to explain how I arrived at the assertions given above and answer any questions you may have regarding omega 3 fats. I’ll review recent pertinent research along with sharing some of my clinical experience in treating and managing persons afflicted with these same disorders.
In September of this year, I’ll be presenting an overview of the evidence for the use of omega 3 fatty acids in both the prevention and treatment of chronic disease and in extending the quantity and quality of life (anti-aging) for the prestigious American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). This multi-part series is based upon the information in that presentation.
In Part 1: What are omega 3 fatty acids? I will explain what omega 3 fatty acids are, how the name came about and about its role on the body. I will touch upon its counterpart, omega 6 fatty acids, and how it is crucial that these two fats be consumed in appropriate amounts.
In Part 2: Dietary Consumption of Omega 3 and Omega 6 Fatty Acids, I’ll review how we arrived at this point where we consume too much omega 6 fats and not nearly enough omega 3s. I’ll touch upon the important issue of potential contamination of common sources of omega 3s and what you can do to minimize your exposure to them.
In Part 3: How important is the ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 consumed in the diet? I’ll explain what happens when the ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 consumed gets out of balance.
In Part 4: How can I limit my consumption of Omega 6s and maximize my consumption of Omega 3s? I’ll challenge the readers to begin reducing their consumption of harmful omega 6 fats in small ways at first for those interested primarily in prevention, or for the so inclined, the big ways that are necessary for those suffering from an omega 6 excess condition.
In Part 5: The Underlying Role of Omega 3s in the Prevention and Treatment of Disease...I’ll review the underlying mechanisms of how changing the balance of consumed omega 3 and 6 fatty acids affects chronic disease and aging. In each of the following parts, I’ll present evidence that omega 3 fatty acids, in conjunction with other strategies can successfully prevent and in some case treat and or manage a wide variety of chronic diseases.
In Part 6: Omega 3s in the Prevention and Treatment of Heart Disease, I’ll review the evidence to date that demonstrates what role omega 3 fatty acids can play in both the prevention and treatment of a variety of forms of heart disease.
In Part 7: Omega 3s in the Prevention and Treatment of Cancer, I’ll review recent studies that shows that therapeutic doses of omega 3 fats can have a significant effect on minimizing the risk of developing some forms of cancer and as part of an integrated strategy to treating some forms of cancer as well.
In Part 8: Omega 3s in the Prevention and Treatment of Metabolic Diseases, I present the case for omega-3s being used as part of a smart metabolic and diabetes prevention strategy. I’ll touch upon recent research that shows how omega 3s can play an integral part of a successful treatment strategy as well.
In Part 9: Omega 3s in the Prevention and Treatment of Mood Disorders, I’ll present evidence that supports the use of omega 3s in both the prevention and treatment of mood disorders.
In Part 10: Omega 3s in the Prevention and Treatment of Stress, Learning and Memory Disorders, I review studies that show how omega 3 fatty acids are successfully treating conditions that fall into this category.
In Part 11: Omega 3s in the Prevention and Treatment of Inflammatory Arthritis, I’ll bring to your attention the overwhelming evidence that demonstrates that an integrated treatment plan for inflammatory arthritis is the most successful approach one can take.
I encourage you to follow this series, as there will be ample space to have all of your questions answered. Part 1 of this series will follow next week and subsequent parts will follow each week thereafter.
