Tips and Tricks for Morning Sickness

Currently many women still rely on pharmaceutical products to help with morning sickness, despite being told, contradictorily, to avoid all pharmaceuticals during pregnancy. Drug manufacturers have produced morning sickness drugs, but these tend to get periodically taken off the market due to side effects being experienced.

The most serious, for example, was a commonly prescribed morning sickness drug called Bendectin which was later taken off the market in the US following numerous allegations of birth defects, but this drug is still available and prescribed in Europe and Canada, just under a different name, Diclectin.

Herbal remedies that can help more minor cases of morning sickness include Ginger and Peppermint tea. Nausea can be relieved by the use of tea made from peppermint, while ginger can act against the need to vomit. These are both commonly recommended natural solutions for nausea, including during pregnancy. To help relieve the sensations of nausea, a tbsp. of 2-5 drops of ginger tincture mixed in water or a weak ginger tea in combination with peppermint can be taken. Another way to take these two herbs is to freeze them into ice-cubes, which can then be sucked.

While these herbs do work, for more severe morning sickness this may not be enough on its own.

Homeopathic remedies including Colchicum, Ipecacuanha, Nux Vomica, Lacticum Acidum, Sepia, and Symphoricarpus have all proven useful.

The use of the vitamin B6 and B12 can help relieve morning sickness in a person. If the morning sickness is severe these may need to be injected in higher doses for the shorter-term.

Vitamins C and K can help to stop vomiting and the sensation of nausea. All green foods which also contain vitamin K help to support the digestive system and detoxify the liver, which can also help as a preventative, so a good natural diet can be very helpful.

Usual dosages if used solely include Vitamin B complex (100 mg), Vitamin C with bioflavonoids (1,000 mg), Vitamin B6 (20 mg), and Vitamin B6 or B12 injections as required and if necessary. However, Total Balance Unisex may provide some additional help (If okayed by your doctor first or you wish to try it – remember it isn't a specific natal vitamin).

Other things you can do to bolster and increase circulation and to aid in the prevention of toxins accumulating in the body as a result of increased hormonal activity during the term of pregnancy include:

  • To calm and soothe the stomach, the herb ‘chamomile’ can be drunk as a tea. This can be alternated with other herbal tea made from different plants such as the lemon balm, fennel tea, basil, alfalfa, or even raspberry leaves.
  • The stomach can be calmed and soothed by nettle and horsetail, plants which are both rich in calcium and silica, substances essential to stomach function.
  • To aid the detoxification actions of the liver, dandelion and carrot juice can be drunk on a daily basis.
  • Make sure you get some rest and relax after each meal where at all possible. Eat small meals, often.
